So I am finally moving on from the Contour and test drove a 2002 Mazda Millenia today. The Premier, not the S. Handled well, accelerated very smoothly and the brakes seemed great. All I noticed was some light scratches on the outside. Nothing major at all, just what you expect from a 4 year old car. Oh, there was a long hair looking scratch on the passenger side back window. Looks like someone made a squiggly key mark or something. Its got 56,XXX miles on it and was an off lease vehicle I believe. Looked at it at a dealer that buys mostly off leased vehicles. The window sticker says they want 12,995 and I am hoping I can get them down to $12,000 including the taxes and misc. garbage they charge. They are also offering one of those 5 year, 100,000 mile engine and transmission warranty's for $500 more. My question is:
1. Do you think I can get them down to this price? 2. The Millenia seems like a good car, anyone have and experience with them?
I don't think I am asking much by getting them down to 12 grand. This is kinda a Rick n Barry Used Car place. I really don't wanna spend nemore than 12,000 or 12,500 if I take the warranty. Comments and/or opinions? Thanks.

Yep. Either that or talk them down to 10k out the door.

Wow, okay, good to hear. I thought the price was a bit steep. Any tips on talking these guys down? I'm not experienced at all in car buying. I like the car and haven't found too many other cars that I like in this price range but I'm not about to get hosed. I'll haggle hard I guess.

Get yourself a preapproved loan for what you want to pay and walk in there and tell them you want the car for that much. Let them work out the details. Works for me every time.

Would you think the dealer would actually go down 3 grand on the car though? Seems like a bit of a push.

That's not a horrible price. And $10,000 seems way too low, IMHO.
1-Year older fully-loaded Mazda6s without the same mileage list for about $6,000 more than that at retail. I doubt just an extra year would make the car a full 40% less in value, even if the design is a little old.
What they're asking is in line with KBB and NADA retail values, and I imagine $10,000 is less than the paid for the car in the first place so I doubt you'll get them that low unless they've had the car for a while and just want to cut their losses.
Would I pay $12,000 for a Millenia? No. But there are apparently many people who will. All the Millenias on lots in my area with similar mileage are listed at $14,000 to $15,000 (The $15K one is an 'S' with 50k). Only one is remotely close to $10,000 and it's a base model with almost 80,000 miles on it for.
$12K Out-The-Door is probably a good price to shoot for, IMHO, if you really like the car. That's probably a sale price of something like $11,200. That's a whole lot less than you could pick one up for around here anyway.

Thanks for the reply. I thought that 10 grand would be pretty low as well. The car is attractive to me and 12K out the door doesn't sound bad. I like the car but for my price rang (10-12K) it doesn't seem like I can find much more of a car with lower miles on it. I feel whatever car I get it will grow on me, just like my Contour did. I recall not likeing that car at all when it was given to me. I guess I'll keep my eyes open and possibly try to pick this car up for a good price.

that's what everything boils down to.... anything is only worth what someone will pay...
who cares what books say or what things aprraise for...you have to find someone to buy it (appraisals and NADA, KBB are only a ref as to what people have been paying for similar things.)
Decide what it is worth to you and then go offer it. If they don't take, there will always be what you want for the price depending on how patient you are.
