You'll generally do better with a locally owned smaller bank, rather than the mega-banks like Bank of America, Wells Fargo, US Bank, etc. Smaller banks are usually more customer orientated and appreciate your business. Unless you need the coast-to-coast coverage of the mega-banks, I'd stay away from them. And remember, ALL banks offer $100,000 FDIC insurance, regardless of their size.

I have a savings account at LaSalle, and a checking account at TCF and another one at Harris.

I wouldn't recommend any of them, though Harris seems to have great customer service at the branch by my work.

Well not sure if you americans can bank with them but PC Financial has no fees. None, zilch, zero.

I used to bank with TD CanadaTrust. They had great hours. 9-5 mon teus, 9-6 wed, thurs, and something like 9-8 on fri and 9-3 on saturday. I think they were closed on sundays though. They had ok service charges, but than changed them in may. Now you cant go into the bank without being service charged, unless you have the 12.95 a month account, which they will waive if you got over a grand in your account all the time. Well i dont and what really ticked me off was them giving out IPODS to new accounts. What about rewarding existing customers.

but back to PC Financial. No service charges, good interest on savings accounts and more than decent interest on chequing account. Free cheques, internet banking, over the phone, and you can go to some of the kiosks in some stores but thats the drawback, not too many of them and theyre only in the cities.

Standard Federal-- Used to have National City but they are horrible-- everything is much easier with standardfed. -- I felt like I always owed national city something and overdrafted more somehow I like the online banking system now (don't know if National City has it or not) but, I didn't USE it at least until I had Stand.Fed.-- Especially when i'm up at school it's extremely easy to use-- The internet statements they give you (sum of money you have) are inaccurate at points (say you have more, don't include current transactions at times) but sometimes they do-- I guess that goes into the whole debit/credit thing though, but sometimes it takes them about 5-6 days to record... I always thought it was 2-3... Who knows--

Banking is only as easy as people make to my belief

EDIT::: Standard Federal IS LaSalle (name changed a while back, i'm used to S.F. since my parents have used it forever)

Where are you located? You don't post your location information and questions like this are more about your local area than anything else.

I myself use a local bank called Artisans Bank. No fees for checking, savings, debit cards, or unlimited online banking. I've heard good things in the Philadelphia metro area about Commerce bank, great hours (7:30 AM - 8:00 PM for drivethru banking M-F, 7:30 AM - 6:00 PM Sat, 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM Sunday) and free accounts, go here for more info:

I use ING Direct online banking for my short term savings and escrow accounts, linked to my Artisans checking account.

I use US Bank for checking, ING Direct for savings. If you don't have a US Bank in your area, the other that I would recommend is Bank Of America.

Steer clear of 5/3. Their systems are extremely outdated. Unless they upgraded in the last year or so, their technology is laughable, which limits their products and their ablity to serve you.

With banking the way it is today, you should get everything for free. No monthly fee, free online banking, free internet bill pay, free check card, blah, blah. If there is a fee, it is due to you screwing up. And get some type of overdraft protection. But you never plan on overdrawing, right? You never plan on getting in wreck, but you have car ins right? OD protection is like free insurance on your account.

And, if you were screwing up your account, overdrafts, playing with the float period on checks you wrote, using your check card before your direct deposit hit, you have no one to blame but yourself, not your bank. Everything is electronic now, and the smart banks are keeping up.

Thanks all.

I got all my cash sitting next to me now. I still have a few more phone calls to make today and hopefully I can pick something this week. Checking doesn't really bother me since I never write checks.

Input is appreciated
