Aggression is not the whole problem. Most aggressive dogs don't have the ability or inclination to tear people apart.
Most pitbulls dont have the ability or inclination to "tear people apart" either.

When was the last time you heard of someone getting "nipped" by a pit bull?

Poor them. It must suck to live in such ignorance of the world around them.
I hope you will continue on your path to a good education.
Having a pitt bull seems a lot like having a loaded gun except an animal can be unpredictable.

Ever see what a car accident can do? Do you know how many people die in car accidents every year due to poor judgement?
Use poor judgement with a car, a dog, a gun, or a can opener and you pay the price. Don't maintain your vehicle, and a part can fail causing an accident. Don't pay attention to taking care of any dog, or put the dog in a bad situation, and there is a good chance of having an incident.
No dog is 100% safe. When my dog was not even 6 months old, he was attacked by a Pomeranian half of his size and bit on the nose. The people that own that dog are terrible dog owners and have the worst behaving dog on the street. But MY dog, the loving and most likely to lick you until you cry for mercy, is the EVIL one?
Please. give me a break.
Dogs ARE predictable. Raise them right, socialize them and treat them well and they will protect you and your family. Do somethign stupid and you will create a tragedy. it doesnt matter if you have a poodle or a mastiff. Or a APBT.

It happens all of the time. Especially when dogs are puppies and until you teach them that biting is not acceptable play.
The only reason I said "nipped" instead of "bitten" was that the dog was in an aggressive posture towards my sister, but could not get the right angle to puncture skin before we got control of the dog. The aggressive beahvior and intent to bite was there, but it couldn't pull it off, thankfully.
That dog we had not had long and the friends that gave it to us gave no indication of how the dog was raised.

Really? The inclination part may be a separate issue but which types of pitbulls lack the ability to "tear people apart"? Whatever type that is, I think we should encourage the breeding of that type and create strong disincentives for the breeding of the other type.

No, you prove to me at ALL APBTs, Staffies and AmStaffs have the ability to "tear people apart". It is YOUR assumption.
"Pit bulls" are no more destructive in biting than other dogs, in fact often less. Pit bulls are more likely to bite and hold, where as other dogs are more likely to bite, release, and bite again.
As for inclination, reread the bit I posted earlier about agression.
Edit - Oh, and you did hit on an important part of the problem. BYB's (Back Yard Breeders) are part of the issue, breeding without proper knowledge of what they are doing, not properly culling the progengy of whatever dogs they are mating, and not checking for known problems in the breed (physical problems that can often put the dog in serious pain, and make them more likely to agress).

And i'm sure i'm talking specifically about poodles! Leave it to a CEG'er to take something to the most ridiculous extreme possible!
There are several breeds that are more vicious than pits.
Secondly, the most vicious dog towards other people that i've ever seen was a friends palmeranian. And I had neighbors that had 2 pits they used to fight, and win with all the time. Rusty and Baby. One time rusty jumped the fence and got into the street where EVERY kid on the block was playing. Parents flipped the fugg out, but rusty was as nice to the kids as could be. Including myself.
A majority of the most disciplined dogs i've ever met were pits.
Dogs are pack animals, they do what their dominant pack leader allows them to do. If you have a mean dog, it's your own fault. Unless it's mentally retarded.

Its all how a dog is raised, plain and simple. If you show the dog how to behave and treat it well, you will never have a problem. If you can not teach your dog right from wrong, maybe YOU shouldnt own one. I hear cats are loads of fun And just cause, here's my Daisy We adopted her 4 years ago from a shelter, she was abused and abandoned. Probably the best dog I'll ever have, so sad they way people treat animals.
