[devil's advocate] Pits are usually more aggressive. That IS in their breeding. Humans have the ability to rationalize and not act on instinct. But you take a person or animal with a naturally aggressive personality, and put them in the right environ to foster that, and you'll have a monster on your hands.

But on the other hand, one of my former neighbors had a sheepdog... you know, the shaggy dog, and it is the ONLY dog that has ever bitten me that wasn't playing with me.

However, this does NOT mean that pits are any better or worse than any other breed. Just unfortunately they've gotten a bad rep due to all the reports of assaults. One of the sweetest dogs I've ever met was a pit.

It's also VERY likely that a pit bite IS worse than another breed due to their genetics- their jaws are abnormally strong for their size, and they are bred to ignore pain.

[/devil's advocate]

There are a lot of dogs you cannot own w/out an additional rider in MA - APBT, Dalmation, German Shepherd, Doberman, Rottweiller, and a few others that were deemed "dangerous" by the state.

That doesn't make me a moron, it makes me heartless. Get it right. Yeah, I'm dead inside. And don't expect any sympathy from me should YOU ever be attacked by a pit bull. You will have obviously gotten what you deserve, as these dogs are angels and pure as the driven snow.

My white-trash neighbor has two pits. They are constantly getting out of the back yard and charging and snarling at people on the street. They have, on numerous occasions, attempted to attack me and my dog in my own back yard. I told the owner in no uncertain terms that if their dogs ever did that again to me, I WOULD kill them. I will kill it, I would be completely justified, and I won't appologize for protecting myself from a dangerous animal.

In that case, I say you would be justified. The owner sounds irresponsible and obviously cares little for the behavior of his dogs.

I have neighbors like that too. Their dogs are constantly loose and hanging out at the fence to my backyard, where my pit bull spends hours running up and down the fenceline "playing" with them. The dogs are fotunately not mean, as there are lots of kids playign in the streets, but a responsible dog owner makes sure his or her animal is properly housed and not running loose. Especially if the dogs are agressive towards other dogs and people.

However, your example is a far cry for what happened to Yogi's two APBTs. Someone breaking into his backyard and murdering his two dogs that had threatened no one was as much property distruction as a thief breakign into your hosue and vandelizing it. Even more so since the person ruthlessly killed two living breathing dogs that never hurt anyone.

I wrote these two posts in another forum, but they are applicable here.

That sounds like "I don't like black people because everyone knows they steal and they could snap at any second."

Doggie discrimination!

No dog is bred to be evil. Dogs are trained to be evil. Dogs also react different to stimuli than we would. People who are around dogs need to learn to to show behavior that fits in the dog's mentality, that is how we can communicate and live with them effectively.

I am sorry, but if a dog, even if previously exposed to a person starts behaving differently, there is a change in the environment that would explain that change. Not to mention there would have to be something YOU do to provoke an attack.

When my mom was pregnant with my little sister, our dog at that time, a mix Springer Spaniel - Blue Heeler was very protective. The dog would go into a threaten posture when men he knew approched the house with my mom inside. My dad made a quick movement towards my mom (for affection, but the dog saw only the quick movement) and the dog immediately went to protect my mom, but backed down as my dad moved away from her. Normal speed movements did not trigger the dogs protective instinct at all. After my little sister was born, the dog went back to normal behavior, back to his friendly self and never threatened anyone.

As much as people try to anthropomorphize dogs, that will never work. To be a good dog owner, you need to understand how the dog reacts to ourtside stimulus and act accordingly. I get away with things with my dog that no other person would be as I established pack order early. I also make sure guests in my home don't do things that would trigger the dogs less social responses. Anyone that says ANY dog "would never bite" is an idiot. ALL dogs can bite. Good socialization, good training and KNOWING how dogs react to things if vital for owning ANY pet, especially a 40-70 pound pitbull.

There are different kinds of canine agression. There is human aggressiveness and prey agressiveness. Most dog bite situations are more a result of territorial encroachment or unwanted dominating behavior by the human. As for pit bulls they were trained to first fight bulls, then other pits then they went our of favor as dog fighting gave way to ratting. A human agressive pit bull was unwanted by a trainer as he needed to handle the dog in the ring, often injured. Frequently that involved gettign close to the dog's mouth as pits would tend to bite through their own lips during a fight. The handler would need to grab the dog during a break and push the lip off of the tooth. Most dogs do not like to be handled by the face. it takes trainign from the time the are pups to do this safely and to be trusted by the dog. This need for a lack of human aggression in the "heat of the fight" led to any dog showing human aggressive tendencies to be destroyed or at least no longer bred. But now take German Shepards. They are far more likely to be trained in a "human agressive" role such as a a K-9 police dog, but it has been 40 years since they were considered "evil" by the media and society in general.

So to address your point, if a pit bull does act aggressive towards a human, somethign has been done to the dog to increase it's aggression towards humans or a disreputable breeder has not been careful enough in his selection.

FYI, there are only three actual "breeds" that are true "pit bulls". American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers and Stafforshire Bull Terriers. The difference is the group that sets the standard for the breed. The most restrictive is the British Kennel Club's Staffordshire Terrier definition. The American Kennel Club and the United Kennel Club have slightly different definitions based on certain characteristics. However, there are up to 25 pure breeds that can easily get mistaken for a "pit bull".

In fact here a couple of websites that challenge your ability to find the "pit bull"

http://members.aol.com/radogz/find.html
http://www.pitbullsontheweb.com/petbull/findpit.html

Breeders and puppy mills have a lot to answer for with the current situation. There is not nearly enough regulation for breeding dogs.

Hell, there isnt enough regulation for breeding humans.

Oh I forgot, "In B4 da lock Shaggy!!!!"

hahaha! This thread, I think, creates thoughtful discussion, even with that pic!

Keep it on-topic and keep the b/s arguements about who is a moron to a minimum.

Yeah, I'm sure there is a massive conspiracy to cover up all those fatal poodle maulings.

Aggression is not the whole problem. Most aggressive dogs don't have the ability or inclination to tear people apart.

I read all of the posts. I've seen what a pitt bull attack can do.

Having a pitt bull seems a lot like having a loaded gun except an animal can be unpredictable.

It is eaasier to stay ignorant than to educate yourself.

When I was younger, around 14 or so, pit bulls started to become common among the "thug" set in the city I lived in Illinois.

I heard the "1600ftlbs of bite pressure" and "lockign jaw" crap and had no education to teach me otherwise. My friends and I would walk past "that house", where the "drug dealer" lived and get barked at by his chained pit that had alledgedly bitten through a 1 inch chain.

I had no reason to believe at that time that pit bulls were not evil.

Then I got to know a few.

We had some "bad dogs" too. A Chow Chow that nipped my little sister. That dog was returned to the people we got it from. It died a while later due to someone feeding it meat filled with glass shards.

We had a cocker spaniel that bit a young boy becuase the little [censored] (the kid was a PITA, I was inclined to bite him on a few occassions as well) grabbed the dog by the ears and tried to "kiss" it. Shame on my mom and his mom for not watching him more closely.

These things and others have gotten me to educate myself about how dogs behave and how they react to things.

Most people are too lazy to do the same.

Poor them. It must suck to live in such ignorance of the world around them.
