I find it hard to be sympathetic though. Just last week a woman was attacked 60 miles from here. Lost several of her fingers. Personally, I think it is the one breed you should have to have a license to own. Just like you would with a dangerous exotic animal.

I don't agree with puppies being killed in what I assume from the post is a pretty horrific manner. Don't get me wrong. I just can't sympathize or empathize over the death of a pit bull.

As for the woman attacked by a pitbull story, as usual, there is an assumption that the dog has done somethign wrong.

Let's say I told you that last week a woman was shot 60 miles from where I live. (and there probably was). Do you assume that the person that shot that woman did so for no reason? Perhaps the woman was shot in self defense. Perhaps the woman gave the other person reason to fear for his or her life. Every time I hear a "dog attacks person" story, all I see is the info that is NOT there. Did the person make an aggressive move towards the dog or it's owner that triggered a protective response. Was the dog purposely agitated? Was the dog's "territory" invaded? Perhaps the dog had been mistreated and was not trusting of strange people. Did the person exhibit dominating behavior that a good number of dogs of all breeds would react aggressively to?

Dogs never attack for no reason. Many times, the way they have been raised, such as lack of proper socialization and training, results in a situation that should not happen. But humans are at fault too. We need to understands the dog's individual and pack agressive triggers so that we do not make the situation worse. We also need to train and socialize our dogs properly to avoid incidents in the future.

If you buy a dog, leave it chained up in the back yard and don't ever play with it, train it or give it time to learn how to behave around other dogs, you are raising a menace.
