sounds about like the experience i had w/ a durango rental on a ~6 hour drive between here and the middle-of-nowhere, arkansas for work a few months ago. felt like i was piloting the queen mary....and i'm even accustomed to driving a lumbering SUV on a daily basis. that thing was huge, slow, and i felt like i was going to get blown off the road sideways in one of those wrath-of-God prairie-country thunderstorms that spawn tornadoes on a whim. brake pedal felt weak and mushy; ergonomics were a bit backwards - i kept turning on the brights when i was trying to turn on the windshield wipers.
I was not a fan of the big durango, to say the least. glad i wasn't footing the bill for the rental - and especially the gas!
the '05 grand cherokees and '06 murano that i had for subsequent trips were much more to my liking. i was actually VERY impressed w/ the murano for highway travel....kinda ugly on the outside but a very good-driving and comfortable vehicle for long drives.
