Perhaps completely unrelated here, but my Dodge Crapeon (Neon) had the same behavior for the longest time and nobody could properly diagnose it. CEL was too generic.

Changed many parts without success, until another forum suggested changing the Crankshaft Position Sensor�and that did it!
