I (My parents) pay $13,000 a year in property taxes on a 2500 sp ft home.

i think the problem is not that you live in ontario... move anywhere else than ontario or british columbia and the tax will be lower... is way much cheaper to live in quebec i must say... prov. sales tax are lower (en tax in general) school fees are lower ect...
i dont think going to US will solve your problem really

I have a 1900 square foot home that I pay $2200/yr property taxes on, and a 1200 sq ft home that I pay about $1200/yr property taxes on. Gotta love the Homestead Exemption!
Electric bills are both at about $130 per month average.
No income tax in Florida either!! Yay ME!
