Alright let's start from the top, first I took out the dash of my 2000 svt contour to fix dash warp. This is when this problem occurred, my charging system died. I replaced the battery and alternator at the same time. The system was still not charging; so I ran a 4 gauge wire from the alternator to the positive cable on battery. I also ran new wire to the ground the battery. I replaced both battery posts. I replaced fuse number 7 under the hood fuse box. I am running a .02 amp draw with ignition off and doors shut. I replaced the mega fuse. I took out the alternator again and had 2 different places test it, it passed at both. The car dies soon after starting it. You can watch the voltmeter just fall down while the car is running. But the battery will hold a charge when the car is not running. I am completely stumped. Any ideas? If I get no suggestions I am just gonna drop it off at my mechanics shop and tell him to deal with it. BTW even with a full battery the Instrument cluster does not work. Might be related, might not be. Open for all and any suggestions.

thanks
joe

Try replacing the fuse for the Fog lights. It is Fuse 5 for Pre-98's, not sure if it is Fuse 7 for the 2000 models. In addition, check the wiring which goes from the alternator to the instrument panel for the battery/charge light. Check if that wire is broken or chafed. How are your fog lights and housing condition?

Edit. Read this thread for the posted threads inside and see if it might help you.

well My fog lights look OK and seem like they are in decent condition. Well I checked every fuse again under hood and inside car with a green light tester and they were all there and good. next I went underneath to inspect the connections to the alternator. The three prong one looked really good and I am getting 12v at the red wire nothing else at the other two. I also inspected the single ground wire and replaced it to make sure it is getting a good ground. What amount of volts are these wires supposed to be running so I know. I know I am getting the right amount of volts at my red hot. Is there anyway to directly wire up the alternator? Thanks Joe

Which set of links did not work? The NECO link in the thread is down but all the info need for the "fix" is in the thread. Yes, searching for alternator will yield lots of good information.
