Interesting... the AAP back in my hometown only had guys in their 30s-40s that were very knowledgeable. Same thing with O'Reillys and Carquest.

Autozone, however, hired random guys out of high school that don't know a damn thing about cars. For some reason, I never got called back after leaving a few applications. Guess my 540 class hours of Voc Auto and above average knowledge of cars made me too smart for em?

Something my brother taught me:

When you are getting a remanufactured part from a parts store (a last resort for him, and now me too), ALWAYS have them bench test it. He was suprised to find out that a solenoid he needed for a customer's car tested bad right off the self... along with all but one of the solenoids behind it!

Happend to me at O'Reillys with their lifetime alternators. When mine died, got one from them w/o bench testing it. It died about a week later, and when I brought it in to be bench/load tested, we found out the test equipment was broken.

So the only thing they could do was swap it out for another one that died the next day.

And so on, and so on until the lady ordered 5 alternators from the warehouse JUST for my car. Her manager was pissed because they normally only carried 1 Contour alternator on hand. Started getting these ones with various problems (bearings, pulleys, bushings, regulators, total meltdown, etc).

After those were extinguished, she set it up for a store in another town to test one they had on hand and deliver it to my store.

They brought one that tested good, and the manager gave it to me while at the same time voiding the lifetime warranty since "there's obviously something wrong with my car" even though all the alternators I returned tested bad for different reasons when their bench test equipment was repaired.

Good thing that one lasted me until I traded the car in!

Something I noticed on the alternators I was turning in for warranty replacements... most of them still had "Motorcraft" parts, where as the very last one I got looked like everything had been replaced.

Did you install them? I would have b!tched until they offered to pay for the part and installation after all that drama, and made sure the warranty was still valid! What a load of crap some of these places are, no customer service what so ever!

All depends on location. Back home in FW, AZ sucks donkey balls and AAP is where it is at. Down here in my area, AAP sucks donkey balls and AZ is where its at.

Napa owns the other stores here as far as knowledgeable workers go. Though prices are sometimes better elsewhere.

Yeah, in my front yard and a couple times right in front of the store. I had it down pat, I could swap an alternator in 10-15 mins.

I pretty much sucked it up since I had more important problems. Drove my mom's 85 Olds Delta 88 while mine was out of service.

Should have demanded ALL your money back AND a new alternator for making you drive that! I'd say that falls under damages for pain and suffering!
