Apparently, they don't realize that not everybody lives in the same place all year 'round.

Sucks for me over here also...

Tried getting a new Debit card, but putting in my APO address (which is confirmed, btw), it tells me this:

You have an invalid address. Note that your address line cannot exceed 26 characters, your city line cannot exceed 18 characters, and you must enter a valid state. Please change it before proceeding.

Way to support us Paypal!

Guess I can't add my German address, either... weird.

Sent them emails regarding those subjects. I'm sure I'm going to get some copy/paste answer that says "you must have a confirmed address blah blah" or something.

Regarding the original subject, I changed and encourage all of you with Paypal to use a strong password:

  • More than 8-12 characters
  • Have at least 1 capital letter
  • Have at least 1 lower case letter
  • Have at least 1 number
  • Have at least 1 special character (~`!@#$%^&*()+=?/><,.)

This will make it EXTREMELY difficult for someone to guess or brute force (use a program) hack your password.

    Password strengths on Wikipedia.

EDIT: oh, and of course, no matter how strong your password is, if you have a key logging spyware or virus program, they're gonna get in your account. Regularly run some sort of spyware scanner (Adaware, Spybot S&D, Windows Defender, etc) to make sure you're clean.

Oh, and NEVER, EVER put your account information into a page that you got to by clicking on a link on some page/email/IM.

ALWAYS type the site in yourself or follow a bookmark YOU made to the log in page.

I recently found this in an IM some girl on my Yahoo list sent out. She obviously has some sort of spyware on her computer since I got an IM saying "hey, check out my new pictures" and some page after that.

I clicked on it (I always dig pics of girls!), and it was an exact duplicate of an old Yahoo Photos log in page, but with the weird URL shown below. I reported it to Yahoo, and it's gone now, but ALWAYS be on the lookout.

http://www.my-photos-personals.8m.net/, which is obviously not a Yahoo page. Don't worry about clicking it, page is gone now.

  • Great info BigDaddy

If you look at your PayPal activity, and view the details of the transaction, you will see the exact date/time. That should help.

7:23PM PDT, which is 10:23PM ET (where I'm at).

Called Paypal again, because i cannot get into contact with the person i supposedly sent this money to to see where the tickets were supposedly shipped.

It looks to me like it was all a scheme just to get some $$$, since the people on ebay whose auctions I supposedly bid on were never paid.

I asked if there was any way I could possibly get in touch with this person I supposedly sent money to and got the same "Get in touch with your local law enforcement, and get a subpoena.

    Great.

So now i'm on the phone with Time Warners security dept., to find out if i can get a log of incoming connections to my house on or about the time all this was done. It seems to be my only hope of proving it wasn't me.

I also discovered in my router that stuff was changed in there as well. Stuff I wouldn't do (firewall off, etc). Stuff noone in my house knws how to do either.I reset it, put all my personal settings back, made up a new password AND updated the firmware.

I checked my event viewer, and don't see anything out of the ordinary. The log goes back to 6/19 too (when i started using this machine). Just normal startup and shutdown alerts about services. Saw some strange ones, but verified them by searching online.

I ran 2 virus scans, one from trend micro online and another from a fresh version of norton i installed when I got home. Found nothing. Also ran a spyware scan and only found some cookies (I use ewido).

I also went to symantecs website and ran their hack threat thing and all came back good.

EDIT: also downloaded some root kit detectors and found nothing!

Does anyone know if only law enforcement can get a subpoena? Or can a lawyer do it. I have a few that owe me some favors. ..

Either that or the fate of my $700 lies in AMEX's hands. People have been telling me all day not to worry too much as AMEX "takes good care of their customers." But I'm worried they'll call paypal and get the same info i did, which is me or someone in my house did this.

Gah! I can feel the hairs falling out of my head!

Rootkits are meant to not be found. Time to reformat and start from scratch. Use some better passwords and stop going to weird Russian pr0n sites.

AMEX is very "customer" oriented and paypal usually is as well. How about this, if Paypal says you did it, ask them where are my tickets then, cause dont have them and never got them. A claim could be filed that when then if it happened recently enough. You should be covered under their protection if they used your address for shipping, any other address and the seller is at risk of Paypal overturning the payment. Just gotta play hard ball.

Now by any chance you dont have a birthday coming up? Marrige proposal at the ball field etc...????

    Thank you for contacting PayPal.

I have issued the debit card for you. I'm sorry their was an issue with the
address. Your new card should arrive in 7-10 business days.

same here, i hadn't used ebay in over a year. the card i had on there was expired too.

it's the paypal that i'm getting screwed with. the card on that account is closed now, so is my other card just incase.

I know the date the transaction was made...i don't think paypal lists the time, but i'll check the event viewer when i get home. I'm going to call time warner and see if i can request activity logs for that day as well.

EDIT: regardless, ebay account is now closed. Paypal is soon to follow. I only used it to pay people on here so anyone i buy something from is gonna have to settle from a money order.

I hope you realize that by closing your account, not only do you make yourself look suspicious, but you deny any further assistance from ebay in finding the culprit. PayPal will not allow you to close your account if something suspicious is outstanding, and doing so will not look good to the credit card company. Basically, if you're innocent, they assume you wouldn't close your accounts, because that makes you look very guilty of fraud. If you want the money back, I suggest keeping the accounts until the issue is resolved. Just change your passwords and your security questions/answers, and wait to close your accounts. I don't see why getting the police involved would be a bad idea in the first place, but if you were to call them now after having closed your ebay account, they're certainly going to assume you're trying to pull something.

Whatever, i'm not leaving myself open for the same stuff to happen again.

Even if i have to eat the money, i'm never gonna get burned this way again. Life lesson learned.

You're wrong about ebay. I'm requesting documentation regarding the misuse of my account and am having no problems so far with the live tech.

And I'm waiting to close the paypal account, because i'm not through with them just yet.

Regardless, if I were to get a subpoena (which i probably will) for the info, they will give it to me. And if i get in touch with the authorities and they ask, they will be REQUIRED to give it up. I am COMPLETELY within my rights to close my accounts to protect myself and my personal information. I don't care what anyone assumes. They are not within their rights to deny me information regarding a legal issue.

No offense, it may just be stress - but your post sounds extremely absurd to me right now.

Maybe you should think about it. Consider if you had a huge disputed purchase going on with your credit card company. How do you think it would look if you tried to close your account before they resolved the dispute? Like I said, AFAIK, if you file a dispute with PayPal or a dispute is filed against you, you are not allowed to close your account until the dispute is resolved. At least, that was how it worked when I last worked through a dispute, which has probably been three years ago now. Anyway, I don't know about you, but it makes perfect sense to me.

yes well they are still not allowed to deny me assistance if i go and get the information subpoena'd.

And as i said, ebay has been helpful to me even though i have put in a request to have the account closed.

Paypal has already denied my claim, so i am free to close the account...but as i said i'm not quite finished with them yet.

It doesn't matter how it looks. The point is someone jacked my accounts, and I don't know what other information they have on me, so to protect myself i've cut off everything that's been compromised.

the law is the law. If they want to be bishes about it, i can get the information i want whether they like it or not.
