the problem was indeed the Ball joint.
For anyone who is told that you cannot have a replacement ball joint put on your drivers side of the car, tell them they're wrong and look for an aftermarket ball joint. Ford doesn't offer a ball joint, only the control arm with no grease nipple. Aftermarket costs more, but its cheaper on labour!
