Since you can make 20 gal. of Bio w/ 2 gal. of Ethanol and 20 gal. of used fryer grease, at-home costs probably won't go up much. Unless the demand for the grease gets to the point that a restaurant will charge you to haul it off instead of giving it to you for free.
That was my point. And I'm pretty sure the process needs 20% alcohol, not 10%. Methanol being easier to use in the reaction than the ethanol that you mentioned.

I meant Methanol, not Ethanol. Too much corn on the brain. But the process I observed used 10% Methanol.

forgive my stupid, non-engineering-skills question but if we were to swtich to ethanol or methanol or whatever fuel would all our cars become huge paperweights or do you guys think there would be some possiblity to convert them?? or would it be too cost-prohibitive/unrealistic? just curious....

Ethanol can be used as well, however I do recall that something makes it harder to use. I don't remember why... http://biodiesel.infopop.cc/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/719605551/m/857600061They say 1 liter of oil and 250ml of "methoxide". I know it is for test batches and whatnot, but over at those boards it seems to be a 4:1 ratio, oil to alcohol. I don't know if you can get a complete reaction with less. But I have never done it, just read a lot. I could very well be mistaken.

Your car can run on ethanol now if it is tuned properly. A bumo in compression to about 12:1 will get you gas milage that is as good as what you get now.
Methanol is another story, as it is extremely corrosive and will destroy your fuel system, unless it is replaced with the proper equipment.

I think most can be converted for ethanol, though I don't know what the cost might be. I think it mostly relates to seals and gaskets since ethanol is more corrosive than gasoline.
I know you can use a gas/methanol mixture (something like 80/20) without any modifications. They were selling the methanol blend at the pump in Wyoming back in the late eighties, and I used to get it because it was 5 cents cheaper per gallon (back in the 85¢/gal days). However, I don't know if you can run pure methanol in an unmodified engine or not.
I also know that bio-diesel will run on unmodified engines, but to run a diesel on pure vegetable oil there are some required mods.

changing your rubber fuel lines is recommended for running biodiesel.
i dunno what you mean by running pure veggie oil...cause you can't.
EDIT: and who cares what they pay in the uk?? Their taxes are their problem! Gas triples in price in the last 2 years, and you expect people not to complain!?

Wrong. You can also run waste vegetable oil after it is filtered to remove all the leftover food particles and whatnot.

Diesel engines can be converted to run on pure vegetable oil. In fact, the first diesel engine ever built ran on peanut oil. And no changing of the lines is required to run bio. I suppose you could do it if you wanted, but it is not needed.
EDIT - Aww crap, you beat me to it Tom!
