I am looking to increase my mpg and my hp with some mods to my Zetec 4 cyl. I am looking for like 250HP max. I have an ATX tranny though. Any recommendations? I also saw Sleepz mod-ed air intake, whats the difference between that and a cold air? Which is better? I am a college student and looking to upgrade piece by piece. Please help me out...
btw... I love this website!!!!
1999 Contour SE, Zetec 4cly. CAI with stock air box, velocity stacks on CAI, optimized HP exhaust headers.
Goal: HP somewhere around 175-225. Stock look. Nice interior.

well the only real way to reach 250hp with the zetec is to turbo it. the downside to a turbo is that your gas mileage drops (not what your looking for). the second downside to turboing the zetec is that nobody makes a kit for the contour and you have to do it all yourself or pay a shop about 5k-6k. if your looking for more power at a better price Hector (EVOLUTIONVIII i believe) put a supercharger on his ATX zetec awhile back. he can help you with that. im sure hell chim in eventually.
when adding boost nothing is affordable for a college student (trust me im in the process and its on hold right now)

I Still say Carburetion is probably the best way to go if you don't want to worry about busted internals. Of course carbureting a Zetec isn't nearly as easy as carbureting a Small Block Chevy, but hey is anything easy with this engine?

unless your running 300+whp on a stock block you wont have to worry about 'busting' internals.. Zetecs a stout motor with below 275whp daily driven.

But what fun is it without twin scroll turbos and a blower!

Like I said in the other thread... Originally posted by ButtonPuncher: I agree with everyone else. The only affordable way to get 200-220HP is either with a turbo or supercharger.
For now, the easy cheap upgrades are... SlepperZ intake K&N replacement Filter Crank UDP
For power you would want either a...
Jackson Racing (JRSC) Focus SVT M62 Supercharger
OR
GT28RS Turbocharger
OR
T3 Super60 Turbocharger
All of those will get you into the 200+ wheel HP region. The JRSC M62 supercharger would be the easiest to install. It is practically a bolt on, especially for your '99 Contour. They can also be found in the "For Sale" secions on the Focaljet forums and Focus Fanatics forums.
Currently putting a turbo on a Contour is a DIY project. Myself and two others are working on putting a tubo on their 'tours. I'm hoping to get a header adapter and downpipe made up so that others will have a much easier time.
You will still need 42# injectors, a Mustang GT or Lightning Mass Air Flow sensor, upgraded fuel pump, and proper tuning to make it all work.
Also, welcome to the CEG!
Please read through all of the stickies at the top of this forum and use the Search feature. All of these questions have been asked before.
Later, BP
BTW, you can't have more power and better fuel economy. It doesn't work that way. When you add a power adder (turbo or supercharger), you have to drop your air-fuel ratio. The only way that you can get around that is to make your engine more efficient which costs $$$$$$$. FRPP head, high lift cams, carburetor setup, and a stand alone engine management system. Not really for the cash strapped college student.
Stick with the SleeperZ intake, crank UDP, and K&N filter for now. (The SleeperZ intake is a CAI because it pulls air from the fender, not your hot engine bay. Mine is a warm air intake. )
