These types of comments are typical for Alfa. I think, honestly, that Alfa tends to push the envelope--a lot.
The original GTVs received similar comments, but are now regarded as some of the most beautiful compact sedans ever made. Alfa design themes later became commonplace features, but at the time were just too "different" to please everybody. (That's a good thing.)
