Did you perhaps stop and think for one minute that the yuppie may have thought that indeed bikes were small and you had plenty of room? Did you explain calmly to him that no, in fact you didn't have room?
Primary instigator of fights is inability or refusal to see the other person's point of view. From what I'm reading, he didn't think he was being a jerk one bit, and you certainly didn't help the situation by not explaining the problem.
