I noticed it...

Ok, the 2000 Impala 9C1 was supposed a more economical car to drive instead of the V8 P71 Crown Vics.

Wanting to decrease costs, town I lived in back in Iowa switched their entire fleet (save a couple for chases I guess) to the gray Imapalas.

Apparantly with nothing but problems (brakes mostly), they switched the entire fleet the next year back to P71 Crown Vics due to reliablilty issues with the FWD Impalas.

Now this could have been caused by lax maintenance by whoever repairs their cars, since the Air Force has used (and still continues to use) 9C1 Impalas for the Security Forces cars...

I have also seen the Intrepid police cars, they used them back in Iowa for the county Sheriff rides.

Here the Polizei uses some FWD cars. Most I see are Mercedes and BMW wagons with a few mk3 Mondeo sedans. I saw an old Ford Sierra still used over near Stuttgart!

This probably isn't so much because the Impalas are better, but because Chrysler has maintained a huge percentage of the federal government vehicle contracts from way back in the early '80s when the US government bailed Chrysler out of bankrupcty.

As far as I can tell, all 2008 Police Impalas will be 3.9L V6's. I don't have the information for 2006 models, but the one my company has in our garage is the 3.9L as well. We have a few SS civilian models as well, but no police V8.

i've really got to get up close to one of these things and have a look. unfortunately there's only a couple ways i know to get a detailed look at a police car - and i don't wanna do that!

Other way is to walk up to a friendly looking guy and tekk him you're interested in the car... worst case would be he tells ya to take a hike.

I got a cop to let me take a picture of a toy of mine in the back seat of her cruiser.
