ALright, I've got a 99 Mystique, V6, ATX with the returnless fuel system. My car had a problem when it was under warranty and the fuel tank was dropped, cleaned and the fuel pump/housing replaced. The problem then was the same as it is now, when it gets below ~1/4 tank it hesitates. I had this problem at about 70k miles again so I pulled the fuel pump and cleaned it out good. Problem solved, at least for a little while... Another few thousand miles later, the problem returned, so I bought the FSVT pump and dropped it into my housing, after replacing the external filter and cleaning the sock that is on the bottom of the pump. Also, I removed the screen at the bottom of the pump housing.
The FSVT pump was installed at 84k, the car now has 94k and im having the same problem again, car gets below ~1/4 tank and it hesitates, fill it with gas, problem is gone... Has anyone else had this problem and had it return? Also, my out-of-tank filter was clogged up as well, but replacing that did nothing for me...
Im thinking that dirt is somehow getting into the tank, maybe by the filler tube or possibly by the part of the pump that you remove at the top of the tank, but that gasket was replaced a few times.
Does anyone have any ideas? Im getting sick of this problem returning.
My GF's dad who is a mechanic at a Lincoln/Mercury dealer thinks I have another pump going bad... What do you guys think?
All ideas are welcome!
EDIT: Oh yea, if no one has any thoughts, im gonna drop the gas tank and see what I can figure out...

It could be possible that you DO have another pump going bad, but it wouldn't be my FIRST guess. Unless you are dropping the entire tank to have a look at the entire TANK, you (obviously) already realize that the pump can be accessed through the rear seat, and removal of the tank is not required.

Yes, I know the pump can be accessed from under the rear seat. But, I want to see if somehow dirt is getting into the tank... Thats what im thinking is the problem. Maybe through the filler?

Well, I think im gonna pull the tank tomorrow night... Im out of ideas, i've pulled the pump and cleaned the tank 3 times now, last time replaced the fuel pump. And every time I change the fuel filter its clogged up, even last time with only ~10k on it...
As much as i'd like to take the easy way out, im sick of having this problem come back all the time...

If you cleaned the tank 3 times and changed the fuel pump and fuel filter and it still clogs up, I wonder if you should go to another gas station for gas. Maybe the sediment from the gas station's tanks are causing your problems.

I was wondering that too, but I get gas all over the place so its hard to say where the bad gas would be coming from...
Im not sure what to do at this point...
