you are comparing the mk4 and mk5 gti's like they are identical except for the name. perhaps some research would do you some good.

I don't see where he's talking about a mk4...
Sounds like to me that he's talking about the difference between a 2006 "Golf" and the 2007 "Rabbit" which is just a name change since technically the 06 Golf GTI and the 07 Rabbit ride the same platform.

Not trying to be a dick or anything, but the 2006 non-GTI Golf is a mk4.
Pretty much what he was saying about them just changing the name was that VW noticed they were not selling many Golfs over the past few years, and realized they needed something to jumpstart the car's sales.
I'm sure it was too early to calculate mk5 sales when they made this decision since they are so new (and only the GTI mk5 was around for 06), and the mk5s started off with the "Golf" name, then switched to "Rabbit" for 07 with no new chassis.

there is some severly conflicting info around the internet i see. that is from an article about the new 2006 golf. then on msn autos they show the 2006 golf as a mk4. strange...

Yeah, I thought all 2006 Golfs were Mk5 until I was on Consumer Guide and saw the mk4 for 06. Read an article on them changing the name to Rabbit (new to me, looked it up b/c of this thread) which said the mk5 GTI was released before the mk5 regular car, but all the Jettas had the new bodystyle for 2005.5...
I'm not much into the car scene back in the States... I mostly see new Euro cars all day long (and how they release the new styles here before the States).

Huh. I thought the Rabbit was smaller than the Golf. In fact, I was thinking that VW had brought the Polo over and renamed it.
