I thought you were gonna talk about VW going back to the Golf's original name, Rabbit, to help struggling sales. Apparantly, the MK4 Golf is a BJ and doesn't sell. So VW changes the name back to Rabbit and calls it a whole new platform. But hey, it's got a 2.5L I5!
talk about ignorant
you are comparing the mk4 and mk5 gti's like they are identical except for the name. perhaps some research would do you some good.

I don't see where he's talking about a mk4...
Sounds like to me that he's talking about the difference between a 2006 "Golf" and the 2007 "Rabbit" which is just a name change since technically the 06 Golf GTI and the 07 Rabbit ride the same platform.
then your reading comprehension sucks.
he said they changed the name of the mk4 to rabbit because it wasn't selling.
1999.5-2005 = mk4 2006-???? = mk5

Not trying to be a dick or anything, but the 2006 non-GTI Golf is a mk4.
Pretty much what he was saying about them just changing the name was that VW noticed they were not selling many Golfs over the past few years, and realized they needed something to jumpstart the car's sales.
I'm sure it was too early to calculate mk5 sales when they made this decision since they are so new (and only the GTI mk5 was around for 06), and the mk5s started off with the "Golf" name, then switched to "Rabbit" for 07 with no new chassis.
