Searched with no results; got this at work yesterday:

""""From work intranet"""""

Like many of you I have relatives in the armed forces (my younger brother and several cousins). I received a request from my brother to send money to buy a helmet kit. At first I did not know what it was, sent the money, and then started doing some research.

During my research I was surprised to find out that current helmets are not designed to protect our troops from a blast, which can cause the skull to violently shake within the helmet and cause severe brain damage. However, there is a simple solution - a helmet kit which can absorb the shock. Unfortunately, many troops cannot afford to purchase this kit.

There is an nonprofit organization that is working with these solders to get them helmet kits free of charge. For a contribution of less than $100.00, a kit can be purchased that can protect one service member while on tour in conflict areas.

The nonprofit is Operation Helmet, based out of Texas and run entirely by volunteers. Their website is www.operation-helmet.org. I did research on this organization, and they have been featured by Larry King Live, CNN, and MSNBC (as recently as last night).

Regardless of our feelings on the current conflicts (believe me I have my strong opinions) I do not believe that our armed forces should be under-equipped. Please take the time to read/research on this and if you can - please make a contribution (tax-deductible). Please also forward this to all your friends and family so they are aware of the current situation.

Thank you.

Just a thought.

Oh, that's the thing that Cher was rambling on about recently.

Not true. The standard issue helmets do have built in blast protection via the strap suspension system. The injuries occur when the blast causes the helmet to 'rock' on the servicemans head & the base of the helmet contacts the skull. The kit is an enhancement or improvement to the currently issued equipment and is mainly additional padding around the base of the helmet together with an enhanced strap system to provide better stability. Budget cuts prevented the kits from being issued to all troops.

The standard straps suck and are uncomfy, as is the stock suspension. My last base was cool enough to get us upgraded suspension for our Army deployment, but the guys from Charleston got the suspension/padding/strap setup described above.

When the Army instructors were attempting to teach us how to be Soldiers, one of them was telling us of a strap/suspension setup that has speakers in it. The important Army guys get it for their radios or something, but they can be used for an mp3 player and what not. EDIT: according to the site in the first post, looks like he was talking about the MICH helmet)

Personally, the kevlar helmet is great for hands free (by wedging the cell phone up between my head and the helmet ).

Looks like the going price for one of those kits is $120

This is so sad! We've spent over 180 Billion ont his war and can't afford to properly protect our service men!
