My a/c has been blowing warm air for awhile, and we took a look at the compressor today. After the motor's been running and all warmed up, a/c running full blast, etc., we took a look at the compressor.. The clutch was engaging and disengaging very spuratically, but not instantaneously. It would begin to spin for a few seconds, then gradually slow down to a stop. After a few seconds it would start up again, then again gradually slow down.

My question is, is the clutch supposed to engage almost instantaneously? Like when it shuts off, it should stop spinning immediately, rather than taking several seconds to slow down. I'm thinking it's just a bad clutch, but since I've got 70k miles on it I'm probably just going to replace the whole compressor since I don't feel like doing all the work to replace the clutch.

why not try recharging the system before blowing all of your cash on the most expensive part? I mean, a great ceger once said "Always do the cheap and easy ones first"

I do know that the contours are nutorious for having rough A/C clutch enguagement... On my old tour I could feel the a/c cycle on and off every 10 or 15 seconds, even when I had the bearings and clutch replaced... But I dont know exactly how its supposed to turn off...

The compressor/clutch isn't spinning up like it should. It will spin up for only a few seconds, then shut off, so it won't fully charge/compress (or do whatever it does ) The clutch engagement/disengagement should be instantaneous though, I believe.

Tony whenever "A/C" pops up you copy and paste that link... I've read it 393,379,078 times by now, nothing new... It's not the same problem I'm having.

How much pressure is in your a/c system with the a/c on? At the low side port by the battery the pressure should be about 30. If it's a hot day above 80 the clutch should stay engaged. Also, the system should have above 80psi at "rest" cool engine like if the car is parked overnight. My sister's Mystique had a worn clutch, but it worked at idle, would stop cooling at road speed.
