Contour Enthusiasts Group Archives Forums Modifications Transaxle High Mileage Tranny - should I flush?

I read the faq, and it says do a drain and fill first, as a flush can damage it. What fluid should I use, any advantage in going synthetic?

Tranny has 260K kms on it, and I have no idea what it has seen ( got the car used ).
