Well, I was at bestbuy today, they had a sale on a Gateway laptop.
1.5Ghz Celeron M (yeah, I know I know... but bear with me) 256 MB of memory (I know... but a 512 stick is dirt cheap) 60 gigs (plenty for me) SXGA monitor with the cool Glossy finnish DVD/CD-RW burner SD card port 802.11g wireless 5 lbs, and very thin
about 2 hours of battery life...
A very basic laptop, which should get me through school work and such... See, I want this because Im planning on bringing my desktop along with a little more... beef to it.
The laptop is $600, it looks very nice feels very solid... the only thing I could find wrong with it would be the memory... which can cheeply be upgraded... Seem like a good deal?

TEIN H.Tech Springs

... if a jelly fish stung me.. would you pee on the wound?

Less than a month ago, I got a 1.6Ghz dual core, 1Gb Ram, 100GB hard drive with card reader, DVD burner, wireless, 15.4" widescreen, etc. from dell through slickdeals... for $750...So no, I don't think you got that good of a deal. Just wait on Slickdeals. They will come through soon.

I think we have to go through Bestbuy, its a grad gift from my mom, well she is paying for 500 of it... and I pick up the change... So im trying to get a run for my money there... She is getting a kick ass deal with her Bestbuy card, no interest for a year.

In that case, take what you can get. Check out some open box deals around different stores. Make a day of it, go to several stores, and when you find one you want, lick it, then call her and have her meet you there.

I Highly suggest you rethink the current choice. I don't like imposing my opinions on someone who's got their mind set, but for $600, you could easily wait a bit (next check from work) and gather some extra coin. I haven't researched recently, but I've spotted great deals from $750-$800; brand new. It's a great feeling to get your first laptop, but read around first. Then buy

I would avoid the Celeron, myself. Of course, the laptop I want is also $1400 +/-

That "cool glossy finish" isnt so cool once you try to use it in direct sunlight or a room that is really well lit. It will glare like a MOFO.

I've never understood the attraction behind glossy LCDs because of this ... it's actually the precise reason that CRT manufacturers had to come up with "glare-free" screens in the 1990s. I suppose we're just repeating history?
As for a laptop today, Windows Vista comes out in the near future and might be the standard in your college by your junior or senior year. Looks like you're going to meet the minimum requirements (See here) but barely in some aspects (video card, RAM). Are you planning to upgrade to Vista in the future?
My old college (feels weird to say that, I only graduated in May) gives a comprehensive list of specs for incoming students. Check them out here. They take into account the systems you may need for any course there and preparation for the next four years. Granted it's a bit extreme at this particular school (for example, XP Home is flat-out not supported due to network requirements), but it's a worthwhile checklist anyway that may include some bits you forgot. I would also strongly recommend checking in with your own school's helpdesk to see if they have any recommendations or requirements for systems.

I think you need to wait for a better deal. If this is for school you aren't in any huge hurry (you obviously have a computer to post on). CompUSA had a midnight madness sale yesterday that had some good buys link , as a point of reference. I noticed after browsing slickdeals that they have an Acer going on sale tomorrow that looks to be quite a good deal. Check out these links on slickdeals, this one and this one
