I've never understood the attraction behind glossy LCDs because of this ... it's actually the precise reason that CRT manufacturers had to come up with "glare-free" screens in the 1990s. I suppose we're just repeating history?
As for a laptop today, Windows Vista comes out in the near future and might be the standard in your college by your junior or senior year. Looks like you're going to meet the minimum requirements (See here) but barely in some aspects (video card, RAM). Are you planning to upgrade to Vista in the future?
My old college (feels weird to say that, I only graduated in May) gives a comprehensive list of specs for incoming students. Check them out here. They take into account the systems you may need for any course there and preparation for the next four years. Granted it's a bit extreme at this particular school (for example, XP Home is flat-out not supported due to network requirements), but it's a worthwhile checklist anyway that may include some bits you forgot. I would also strongly recommend checking in with your own school's helpdesk to see if they have any recommendations or requirements for systems.
