OK, let's try this. The differential assembly on a rear wheel drive car actually includes the final drive ring and pinion as well as the differential mechanism that permits the two rear wheels to turn at differnt speeds to facilitate turning a corner. The whole thing is still called the diff.

The equillevant to that is also in a transaxle car. It is just as correct to call the final drive a diff on a front wheel drive car as it is on a rear wheel drive car.

I never remember hearing a hot rodder complaining that he blew the final drive on his dragster, but I have often heard then lament that they blew the diff, even if they blew the ring and pinion.
