a cool trick for lowering the LCA enough to get the ball joint in: take a short piece of chain, at least 18", wrap it around the LCA connect the ends with a nut and bolt. then take a long piece of pipe, feed it through the chain under the LCA and rest the end under the subframe. now you have a long lever that pulls down on the LCA.
i did my drivers side axle with brand new 4-bolt LCAs and got it down far enough just using a prybar.
