Hi, i have a 98' Mercury Mystique 2.5L V6 engine. I was wondering if anyone has pics of where the Transmission pan is or if they can tell me how to do it as this is the first time i am doing this. Thanks

If you look in the stickies at the top of the Transaxle section, everything you need to know is there.

Don't forget to wrap some teflon tape around the drain plug before reinstalling it.

It would help if you would tell us if this an automatic or manual trans. There is no pan on either one.

So if I've never done this, it would be a bad thing, right?

Not necessarily. Sometimes you will get a slow leak (sometimes you won't) at the drain plug if you don't put the teflon tape. The teflon tape will also assist in removing the drain plug the next time you need to do the drain and refill again.
