Huh?

HD = hard drive
HDD = hard disk drive

Same thing, two ways to say it. And what does that question relate to anyways?

It's a T2482, AMD 2400+, 80GB HD, 256MB PC2100, CD-RW, DVD. Not all that bad of a machine.

I told my friend that it most likely is the MB and that I should be able to get one from Newegg for around $40-50. I'll try that first, then if still nothing, she'll probably go shopping.

With those alot of times the power supply goes and takes the motherboard with it(nice). That's an AM37 MB made by FIC. You'll need that board or one made by FIC because the OS is licensed to that hardware setup. I bought the same machine in the same state, replaced the power supply and MB fired it up and it said the license was no good. Called Emachines and they told me sorry nothing they can do. Fortunately for me I have a few copies of XP.
I put this board in and it runs like a champ. DVR on the cheap!

RT, thanks for the info on that MB. I happened to be looking at that very same board from Newegg ($39 + S&H) or the ASRock K7VM3 ($40 + S&H). How did all the connectors fit on that Biostar board? I don't feel like doing to much modifying. Also, I think I'll check the power supply to make sure its not part of the problem.

Wrong.

eMachines is full of it and just want to push you into there own parts. All you need is a OEM XP disk and you can install just fine.

If you are referring to the activation screen that shows up after a board swap, then this is why....

The activation will show up that it needs to be done IF you get lucky with a board that actually boots the OS without a reinstall. It sees a big hardware change and wants to reactivate because that's the way the OS is designed. Well then here's where the problem happens........

The OS is installed by eMachines using a volume license key, which cannot be activated. There factory restore software is "pre-activated". The key that is built into the OS when you get it from eMachines, is not the key you see on the back of the computer. It's a eMachines used key for thousands of computers. It tries to connect to Microsoft to activate but cannot until you change the key saved in the OS OR reinstall fresh from a Microsoft OEM disk and enter the key on the back of the machine and not the one eMachines used for the restore.

In summary, the key on the back WILL activate just fine, no problems. The key built into the restore partition WILL NOT.

So what you're saying is he'll need a copy of XP JUST LIKE I SAID! An FIC board is seen by the OS as original equipment and will not require a reactivation but you have to find one first.

Cool: The only problem is the back I/O plate where the PS/2, USB, serial ports stick out the back won't match up(another emachine quirk). But if you pop that plate out it's fine.

I have an OEM XP disk that I can use to reinstall the OS using the key code on the back of the machine. So I think I may just go with a new MB for starters. Still cheaper than a whole new machine. Thanks to all who added their knowledge.
