The point is that if you are going to dump, let's say $2,000 into a car thats worth less than that, you can buy another used car for the same money and save the trouble of dealing with this car. Nobody said go buy a brand new car because the transmission on this is shot.
It all depends on the condition of this Contour, how well it's running, and how long they plan on keeping it.
It's not cost effective to put in a new tranny if for example you were getting rid of the car at the end of the year.

Labor isn't free, man. Even at $300 for a transmission of UNKNOWN HISTORY AND QUALITY, it is still going to cost money to put it IN the car. (most likely surpassing the value of the car itself, even still..)

Very true, But I'm DIY type of person so I'd put my own it. I wasn't thinking of that when I posted.

maybe from a dealership, i'd go to the junkyard and find one with under 70,000 miles for $300 dollars.
I can get one for 500$ CAD, the problem is to take out the engine and tranny, put the new tranny in, and put the engine back.
That's about what, a 8-12 hour job?
let's say it's 50$/hour, it will come up to 1K.

any money you put into a car is not worth the money, you buy a new car and as soon as you take it off the lot you lose 10 to 20%, you cant sell it for the same price you bought it for, so in your thinking that means its not worth the money. add the loan rate, higher ins, monthly car pymnts, it cost alot to have a car, but still cheaper to keep an older used car .
but if the car is in good shape and you kept up w/repairs it is worth the money. if its falling apart, rusting, neglecting maintance and repairs its probably not worth it to fix the tranny unless you can swap one in yourself. any used car he buys has the potantial to brekdown as soon as he drives it, so money for buying it and then more money to fix it. if a car is paid for and in good shape (and you like the car), it could be worth the money to fix, and he gets a one year guarantee that the tranny will work, probably and most likely longer than that. thats my 2 cents
