AOL was a huge, disturbing fad in middle school/high school for me and my friends. Once I outgrew the need for their extra features (AIM) and discovered the "new" DSL and their free aim messenger, we quickly dropped AOL altogether.

My family has had AOL dialup for 12-13 years now. I can recall AOL 2's "Channels" section and text-only messageboards where I looked up information for gradeschool projects. When AOL 3.0 came out with the integrated browser (a big deal!) it took me many tries to figure out that you had to put "http://www" in front of whatever Web address was advertised on TV.

We tried SpryNet for a while when AOL was getting too expensive, but despite dropped calls with AOL it was still more reliable. Everybody I knew in high school had an @aol.com address until DSL came through part of town in 2000 and cable in 2001.

My parents actually still use AOL with our cable connection despite my attempts to wean them off (waste of money! ) and I have friends who still have AOL dialup at home. There's something about this town and a fear of change, I swear.
