i always throw my keys to valet people, i also have ADT. with all the talk about "the world is tough" and the "everyone is out to get you" POV's a lot of people here seem really paranoid.
"What did you think about that Dorothy girl?"
"The whole Judy Garland thing kinda turned me on. That doesn't make me some sort of fag does it?
"Nah baby, your money."

Really? Since when is lack of common sense somebody elses fault? The world is not going to protect you! you HAVE to show your own initiative, and take responability for your own actions. Is it directly her fault? No not really. But heres the part people don't like to hear, she still could have prevented it!! Give all your keys to a valet? Insanity. Now he can copy your key AND he has all your home address info somewhere in the car. You might as well leave a handgun in the car to make his life easy. And people say "how did this happen?".

Yes you do have to do all that stuff but it is not her fault. If somebody manages to break into your house, is that your fault? Yes she could have prevented it but it's still not her fault like the original poster said. There is plenty of things we could prevent, and I'm sure this includes you.
Personally, I'd rather not live in a bubble, not that giving just the car key would have been that. But should she have also removed anything/everything from the car that had her address on it? There's just a certain point you go to to protect yourself, and I bet her's is higher now, but seriously it was not her fault.
IIRC, I didn't see the woman on her asking us why we didn't stop the guy from getting in her house, so I don't think she thought the world would protect her. I'm sure like most people she just didn't think that would happen to her. And like I said, I'm sure you're guilty of not going the whole nine yards to protect yourself.

Don't bet on it. I have every intention of dying in the sack, in a plane, or a bike, maybe even of old age but I will NOT allow some lowlife to make that choice for me.

My bad, I thought you wanted somebody to kill you. I mean, unless you spend all your time going to extremes to protect yourself and thus looking like a lunatic most of the time, then you're not doing everything you can. I'm almost certain someone still has an opportunity to kill you everyday, and I think it would be stupid for anyone to say it's even partially your fault that that person killed you.

Are you saying that if this woman had taken her car key off the ring to give to the valet, then that would be a lunatic extreme in protecting herself?
There is nothing lunatic in using simple common sense to protect ones self and ones property. I would also posit that it is not lunatic to protect ones self beyond common sense, i.e. registered fire-arms and proper training. Besides, I'd rather look slightly paranoid while breathing than look stupid but pretty in a casket.
This is her fault in the sense that she herself could have prevented it by using just a ounce, nay, a SMIDGEN! of common sense!!
It is not her fault in the sense that this guy was a nut, and if she was specifically targeted (i.e. having nothing to do with her GIVING him the keys) then he's going to do it regardless. Remember, locks are for honest people.
I think he was an opportunist, more so than a methodical monster, but assigning fault here is not what's needed. Assigning responsibility is. She was 100% irresponsible in handing over all her keys. Period. The valet is 100% responsible for his actions AFTER she gave him the keys.

Thank you for saving me from stating the obvious. Some people seem to think personal responsibility is not their well, responsibility. It's not paranoia or looking like a lunatic IT'S COMMON FREAKING SENSE! If you walk around with your head up your bum all the time, expect to be mugged sooner or later. I've said this many times before, you and you alone are resposibile for your safety. I don't even leave a garage door opener in my cars at night. Why? So when some stupid punk breaks into my car and finds the opener he isn't tempted to come in my house and force me to deal with him. My new bike is cabled to a forged eyebolt recessed in the floor. If you get in the garage, (not likely) you won't get my bike. And I'm a very light sleeper. I'm not picking on you Kremit, it's just that you have the "I'm twenty-something and know all" sydrome. I didn't listen to my father or any adults when I was your age either, and I now realize what a wealth of information I snubbed. Because of that I learned a LOT of stuff thru the school of hard knocks, and my body shows it. my Dad died at 83 with his original knees and I've had both of mine operated on. He knew, I didn't listen. My parents are no longer here to draw life experiences from and thats sad. Now I have no choice but to learn the hard way.
Some day you'll look back and realize how little you really did know at this point in your life.

if someone is going to get you, then they are going to get you. no way around it. when your card is punched it's punched. i don't see the point in altering my life drastically to prevent it. taking little precautions like looking both ways, yes, i live in the city and that's a must. but i'm not going to remove keys, insurance info, inspection reciepts and the such "just in case". the way i see it when The Man calls, you go no matter how much you try to prevent it.

jthursby I know what you're saying but do you know what I'm saying? The original poster tried blaming the woman for what happened and it was not her fault. Yes, she could have possibly prevented it, so she didn't do everything she could have. But what I'm saying is even though you do a lot to protect yourself, I bet you don't do every single thing you could. You can do all you do now and be walking in the mall and someone walk up behind you and shoot you point blank. And I reckon that would be your fault because you weren't wearing your body armor that day.
