Going to another Ford dealer won't help if you're really upside down on your van. Upside-down is upside-down. If you were getting X-plan on the Fusion then there wasn't much going on with the price of the car, all the extra was just because of the van.
Buying another car is only going to make your upside-down problem exponentially worse. It sounds like you've already got yourself into a spot where you're quite upside-down on the one you got now. Doing another trade like that may very well be the trade that you simply cannot get out from under that financially kills you. You're going to end up with a $30,000 note on a car worth $15,000. It's a bad, bad place to be in. And most gap policies won't cover that wide of a spread over salvage value and the note. So if you were to be involved in a major accident you could end up MAJORLY screwed, ending up with no car and several thousand dollars remaining on a note, with no one willing to loan you money for a new car while you have an outstanding note.

That is why I never financed a vehicle, no offense.
If you want to get rid of the van and get something more economical I would consider something that depreciates slower than a Ford (Honda and Toyota are good examples). At least that way if you get out of the van you won't always be upside down the loan.
$6k to just get rid of it? I would look into what you owe on the Van and what you think you could really sell it for. You might be able to close that gap a little. But, the first two years is when a vehicle takes the biggest depreciation hit, especially American ones.

If you don't have high interest credit cards like you said, why not pay the $6,000 against the van and keep it for a while?

seriously, that's what I'm thinking. Then maybe try to sell it private sale if you're really itching to get rid of it.
I would never pay those payments for an $18,000 car. Fix your debt before going forward, don't keep continually going upside down.

Yeah, but we are just worried about the gas prices. It's pretty expensive out here. It's gone down a bit, but not much. I love the van, but hubby is the one wanting to get rid of it for another car. I wouldn't mind that either. I'd have have a 5 speed sedan again. I did drive a Toyota Yaris and a Camry too yesterday. I loved the Camry, but the Yaris was too damn small inside, especially for a family of 4. I mean, it's something I could make due with for a while, but I wouldn't want to keep it for too long. I'd want to get the Camry. I really liked that thing but it cost more than the Fusion. You have to look at in real dollars, not some imaginary currency that might be in your head.
If the real goal is to save money, look at it per year:
1. I can save $600 per year in gas! 2. It costs me $6000 up front (just blew 10 years from that first theory) 3. Finance charges will make my car payment the same per year, but it will TACK ON 3 MORE YEARS OF PAYMENTS!!!
Stop being so damn short-sighted. That's what got you here in the first place.

So please don't spew venom at me when you don't understand the whole story. I had been planning on keeping this van for quite a few years myself. It's in hubby's name and he told me to find something better on gas.

Please feel free to foward my comments to your great-with-numbers husband. And why don't you put your foot down on this one if you know that it's going to waste money? Is he even at home to drive the damn thing?

Tell your husband that he needs to do some (very basic) math. He will then hopefully realize that paying $44,000 for an $18,000 car is not smart. Actually, it is stupid. Very stupid.
