One additional comment. On the how too for changing the pump, look at the last photo. It shows the pre-filter screen at the bottom of the fuel pump module. I'll get back to that in a moment. .......

If you end up using the original module housing, make sure that you take the filter screen out and throw it away. You don't need it. As you can tell once you're inside the module there is a sock style filter before the pump anyway.

The pre-filter screen may be all that is wrong. It often is. Later Cougars as well as Foci (plural of Focus) had a recall over this issue (Contour was just old enough to slide under the radar). The pre-filter is too small and too fine, and clogs up with little provication.
