The manual shifter does suck in a major way; but there are options to improve it. I personally love how quiet the car is, with just a hint of exhaust noise and engine rumble coming into the passanger compartment. Just enough to please your ears, but not too much to be distracting.
The back actually has a good deal of room. I can/have (only one time) sat in the back of mine as was reasonably comfortable (I'm about 6'10"). Getting in and out of the back seat however will require chiropractor visits.
The GTO does have it's quirks, but it is alot of fun, and great bang for the buck. Mods are relatively limited, although more available than those for the Contour, and can be pricey as most of them come from Australia. But overall, it's a really good car, and you should be able to get an '04 and a pretty good price.
I concur with the exception of the mods being limited.
Wheels - limited
Suspension - Hotchkis, Eibach, King, Pedders, B&Gs, several coilover kits, Koni, SuperPro, BMR, SLP, etc.
Intakes - K&N, Volant, AEM, Speed, Inc., MPD, Gravana, etc.
Exhaust - Corsa, SLP, Magnaflow, Stainless Works, Borla, B&B, etc.
Headers - long, mid & short - Kooks, Stainless Works, SLP, JBA, Dynatech, Edelbrock, etc.
Gravana makes a ton of stuff.
Midpipes, intake manifolds, heads, cams, intakes, TBs, MAFs, tuning, trans, pistons, flywheels, shifters, clutches, rods, pulleys, etc. etc. etc. There is a LOT of aftermarket being that it's the LS1/LS2 and the Monaro has been around down under. You could easily spend $4,000 on the suspension alone.
If you can get a good price on the 2004, there's nothing wrong with picking that up. There are plenty of mods to keep things fun. 350 is nothing to sneeze at.
Plus picking up your brother's, at least you know the vehicle history as a little peace of mind.
Good luck in your decision.

As others have said though, wait and go with an 05. Night and day difference.
whats the difference? 50hp and a hood scoop?
Well a few things: -50 extra hp and 35 more ft-lbs of torque -electronic TB instead of cable -appearance package -better/bigger brakes
There are other differences as well and since both are considered used at this point there isn't really a huge price difference. Obviously they put the LS2 in there for a reason, instead of just staying with the LS1.

The '05 is not likely to give him the better gas mileage than his Contour. I don't know if that is a big factor for you though.
WTF are you on?
He is telling him to get the 05 GTO over the 04 GTO becuase of the upgrades.. Im sure if he is looking at a 400HP LS2 that he dosent care to much about mileage

If you're really into modifying the '04 is a better choice anyhow. There's a lot more aftermarket and the lower compression motor is better for forced induction. I believe on the GTO boards (it's been a couple months since I've looked) all the top 1/4-mile holders are 2004 LS1 owners simply because there's more power-adder options available (having the car longer probably helps matters too).

Give it some time. The LS1 has been around since 97, the LS2 only since 05. Remember when the LT1 cars were faster than the LS1 cars for a while because the aftermarket was there.....
That always happens when new engines come out. The LS2 is a much better motor overall. In a few years the LS2 market will be HUGE and blow the LS1 out of the water. (Especially if the new camaro uses the LS2 as well)

That's why I'm holding out. Well, that and I'm poor.
