What do you guys think about the GTO? My future brother in law is about to turn his 2004 Black one with 34,000 miles in on a lease and I was thinking of snatching it up. I like the car and it actually gets better milage than my Contour on the highway. I know a couple of you guys run them and I wanted your opinions.

There have been a bunch of GTO threads in CI.
It probably won't take much searching, especially if you click on one user's profile and search for all posts by that user.

As an '06 owner; I really enjoy the car. It has everything I wanted on my next car. It doesn't handle as well as the CSVT did, however it has ALOT more power. The manual shifter does suck in a major way; but there are options to improve it. I personally love how quiet the car is, with just a hint of exhaust noise and engine rumble coming into the passanger compartment. Just enough to please your ears, but not too much to be distracting.

The back actually has a good deal of room. I can/have (only one time) sat in the back of mine as was reasonably comfortable (I'm about 6'10"). Getting in and out of the back seat however will require chiropractor visits.

The GTO does have it's quirks, but it is alot of fun, and great bang for the buck. Mods are relatively limited, although more available than those for the Contour, and can be pricey as most of them come from Australia. But overall, it's a really good car, and you should be able to get an '04 and a pretty good price.

The '05 is not likely to give him the better gas mileage than his Contour. I don't know if that is a big factor for you though.

Don't buy it for "better" gas mileage on the highway no matter if you go with an 04 or 05/06. It is ONLY better if you baby it in 6th gear all the time and lets be honest, how often do you think you will baby it? If you buy a GTO and baby it just to get 30mpg on the highway then go buy something else.

As others have said though, wait and go with an 05. Night and day difference.

whats the difference? 50hp and a hood scoop? if you can pull one for $10k cheaper screw the extra 50hp. he can always add nitrous or a s/c. if you've got a serious deal on an 04, go for it. if you can jump up to an 05 for a just a little bit more, than go for that. obviously the 6.0 is much better than the 5.7 but if it has to cost you waay more than go for what you can afford. either one cant be a bad choice.
