a smog is good for 90 days. if youre car will be under the knife, just pay for the registration and get the smog whenever your car is ready. you wont get fined or anything if youve already paid for the registration. and yes, it can still pass after the 3L is put in. just DONT, i repeat DONT, tell the shop that it is not the motor that came in the car!!!! there are strict requirements that are supposed to be met when a motor swap has been done. my mechanic looked into it (he does smog). he said if hadnt known that i was doing a motor swap he would have the thought it was the stock motor for it, although he originally thought they were 4 bangers
