Recent "SportCompactCar" mag has all the poop on cars in the movie, Etc....................... 100 cars destroyed (pic of burnt cars stacked 2 high) 2000 tires used Tires and rims donated by Manufacturers 3 Mustangs used 1 w/turbo six 1 $14,000 V8 exploded Orange/Black Mazda (Had) Custom Red interior They painted it Black with spray paint!  Nitrous Bottles bought 40 (cars using nitrous-0) Most tire changes per night 50 There is more. NOW you know why these movies cost so much!

That's it. That is what I was thinking in the back of my head but didn't verbalize it. You are correct that in FF1 the characters were all pretty believable. In this one, a homeboy from Alabama goes on to a Japanese high school, etc. Just not so believable.
Han was the best in the movie, and the Okusa uncle. He was good. THat guy has been in martial arts movies since the 60s I think. 
Oh, For those of you who are wondering about the InitialD 2005 movie version, search Ebay there is a couple of sources.

any small interest i had in the movie was gone the second i heard from my cousin that the guy swaps a nissan motor into the mustang. He was telling me about the movie, and when i heard that i put my hand in the air and said "stop! I do not wish to hear anymore of this blasphemy!"
