not to sound completely technologically stupid but i have no idea what components are or how they hookup. i figured composite is the regular red-white-yellow rcas but which is the components? how do they connect to the consoles? do they work on all consoles?
ill probably be googling and such to try and find the answer but your first hand experience is always helpful thanks

component is similar to composit. Three wires, but it breaks it down to red blue and yellow colors instead of one wire for all the video signal.

They're basically the same as Composite cables they just look different. And cost a hell of a lot more. I think the component cables for the PS2 are at least $25.

Playstation2 and XBox have Component output, but I don't believe the GameCube has that option. And all the next generation consoles coming out have Component.

Any new TV you buy is going to have a lot of Component jacks on the back, and probably fewer of the old Red/White/Yellow Composite. That can be an important factor when buying a TV. An additional factor that swayed me to the Toshiba over the Samsung was that it had more Component inputs.

That's one more thing -- You'll have to get used to expensive cables when you buy your TV. There's no use continuing to use crappy Composite cabling with your HDTV, consoles, home theatre system, and (presumably) 720p+ DVD player. You'll defeat the point of buying a nice TV. You're going to need Optical, HDMI, and Component cables depending on what you're hooking up to, all of which (particularly HDMI and Optical) are VERY expensive. You can easily spend anywhere from a couple-hundred to several-hundred on cables alone depending on the ones you'll need, the brand, and the lengths you need. I think 3-feet of optical cable cost me like $70 or some absurd crap.

hmm i think im catching on now... so do you need to get a special composite audio/video cords for each system? that transfers from the red-yellow-white to the red-yellow-white-green-blue?
if this is the case...could i just get an a/v switch box like This one ...plug my xbox/ps2/cube into it, and then just use a rca-to-component into the tv, and simply switch between the consoles? if thats all it takes i think my choice in tv will remain the hl-r5067w but correct me if im wrong please
thanks again!
edit: just read your post sigma, do you think this switcher would work with my setup? would also save me a fair amount of money for the wires if i only needed 1 set...unless for some reason they use a different output slot on the xbox/ps2.. if thats the case i found a 2in1 component for xbox/ps2..but they do seem to use the same port that my xbox and ps2 currently use.

you can find switch boxes like that that are component, but that one is composit and s-video. I know they make component cables like this

You don't get the BEST quality out there but it makes it easy to set up and you only use one input on your tv for videogames

ok i guess my main question is... do you NEED to use component outputs directly from the xbox/ps2 themselves?
..or can you use the regular outputs and then just switch them to components thereafter? (for example: normal outputs into an a/v switch box...composite-to-component after that..then right to tv

you won't be upconverting the signal, if that is what you are asking. It is going to stay the same craptastical composit signal all the way threw. Kind of like having smaller headers on your car with a big muffler at the end. No matter how big the muffler is, it won't mean squat until those headers are changed.

great comparison iguess i might as well just go and pickup that 2in1 component thing for xbox/ps2(side note:that link you gave showed a guncon input..i have the new guncon game) and live with my gamecube composite-ness. ill think about getting a composite switch-box depending on how many inputs it has... i can probably live with 2 for a long time.

thanks for all the assistance, ill update once i pick the tv up sometime next week and get it setup.
