You have to swap only FP and remove screen filter from original pump assembly....last pic here:

After swapping the pump, would it be safe, just as a temporary measure, to reinstall the basket cover without a gasket? I need a working vehicle, my old gasket is too stretched out, and my new one is still a few days away.

can you tell me if you got this fixed i have SAME problem w a 2000 contour i just wasted $500 on the piece of JUNK for a fuel pump and still SAME PROBLEM..unreal that mechanics dont know what their doing please someone help!!!! can i get my money back do u know? i dont think i should be charged for something they are supposed to know how to fix i also replaced my fuel filter i HATE FORDS

Welcome sfemme24 . Is yours a V6 Duratec? It could be a bad IMRC if it is sputtering above 3500 RPM or so. Also check the MAF sensor and air filter.

it is a v6 i dont know what else about it though, its a 2000 contour..piece of crap...the brakes or something was bad too so i had new rotors put on cuz it was shakign when i stopped and that still doesnt feel right either..i told my mechanic its STILL doing it after a new fuel pump and he said he checked his computer there cuz they have some kinda forum for mechanics for known problems w cars and he saw nothing about the contours like this..HELP!!

You may need a new mechanic. Drive it to Autozone or Advance and have them scan for Check Engine light codes (free service). Then post the exact codes here.

i took it to firestone and they put it on computer after the first time it stalled when i was low on gas and he never heard of the thing it said..it was something about the fuel line or something he said he had no clue..and i called ford and asked them they had no idea either they said if it happened again to take it in, which i didnt cuz i was broke and still am..and this mechanic said he thought it was the fuel pump by the way it felt like it was running out of gas when accelerated...HELP i cant afford to take it anywhere else he shouodnt charge me should he to fix it again?
