LCD's are generally brighter and have a better real world contrast ratio. Plasmas do suffer from burn-in, whereas LCDs do not. Burn out is not the problem it use to be with plasmas, life spans are virtualy the same between the two technologies. Picture sharpness goes to plasma. LCD's are cheaper. The cheaper plasmas have poor color recreation and a smaller viewing angle.

My vote....LCoS. Not cheap though. But you get the benefit of both with none of the drawbacks.

So, if the life(half-life) of the plasma and LCD are basically equivalent, then which one gives the brighter picture, is cheaper, etc.?

Never mind.

just for semantics....

It still is true. The quote was "plasmas will "burn out"(?) after so many hours of use." It's just that the hours of use has increased greatly in the last 3 years.

Regardless, 2 Guard, go to your favorite big box stores where you can see all your favorite brands next to each other with the same feed. Buy the one that you think looks the best and never look back.

This is what to do... and bring your OWN DVD, preferably one with no CGI or animation, also with no filters. Check the color settings on every tv you look at as well.

Be sure to grab the remote and set the picture controls to Standard or Movie. Most stores have the color, brightness and contrast set WAY TOO HIGH. Don't let this ploy sway your judgement.

I was at Best Buy last night with my girlfriend. I'm starting to look at replacing my Sony Wega XBR tube TV because I'd like to upgrade to HDMI. Anyway, there were two TVs next to each other, one an HP, and I forget the other, but it was a no-name brand I had never heard of. We're looking at the two, and she mentions how much brighter the other TV looks and how the HP looks "greyed out." At this point I launched into the lecture about color adjustments, and how they set the one TV way too high to compete with the store lighting (which is always incredibly poor for looking at TVs) and how she needs to think about how the picture would look in the living room with low lighting. All of a sudden the HP looked a lot better to her.

Actually I was surprised by how the HPs looked, so much so in fact that I'm going to consider them in my research.

There are more than two. I know LG, PixelWorks, and Toshiba all do.
Same goes for LCD (once you go past the 19-22" range) there are only 4 manufacturers.
So the name you buy means nothing. What you want to know is the grade of the panel itslef. Much like school, A is the best.

The signal processing that goes on around the panel is important too. Things like whether or not the TV has a comb filter for composite inputs and what quality it is (two-line, three-line, three-line adaptive, motion adaptive) can make a big difference in output.

A TV is more than its output device. I would never buy a plasma TV based solely on the quality of the panel.

think of it like CRT monitors vs. lcd's on a computer.

LCD's still have some way to go before they surpass a CRT in terms of picture quality.

I just hung a TV for this guy I know. He got a 50" plasma from dell. It was like $3200. Component, VGA and DVI in...plus all the others except hdmi. Better picture than any LCD tv i've ever seen. If you ask me, LCD tv'a look washed out and dull to me. That plus glare and poor viewing angle(s) are what keep me away. I don't really care if they're cheaper.

I'm haven't really looked at any tv's lately, but if there are any with displays like you see on newer laptops (xbrite, or xga??) then i have no complaints. Otherwise, plasma still wins.
