I have the exact same tube and looking to upgrade as well. Sony's new LCoS (Bravia) line is pretty damned sweet. I looked at a ton of flat panel and rear projection monitors, and none have come close to the quality picture of the Wega XBR that I have (which is pushing close to 5 years old.) The latest XBRs have the features I want and, a picture quality I know will stand the test of time.
If you want a flat panel TV that will make a good investment, make sure it will do 1080p.

when it comes to buying an expensive tv just go to the store and see what has the best picture quality for the price. usualy the hdtv's have the best quality screens. im not sure if all plasma tv's are hdtv though. i dont watch enough tv or play video games that much to even want to spend crazy money on a tv. matter of fact teh tv i have now is a 1992 27 inch trinitron and its tight. and the speakers are loud and clear. it even has s video cables so i can put it to my p.c. i have it in my game room for my ps2. dvd's look great on it.

Anyway, there were two TVs next to each other, one an HP, and I forget the other, but it was a no-name brand I had never heard of. We're looking at the two, and she mentions how much brighter the other TV looks and how the HP looks "greyed out." At this point I launched into the lecture about color adjustments, and how they set the one TV way too high to compete with the store lighting (which is always incredibly poor for looking at TVs) and how she needs to think about how the picture would look in the living room with low lighting. All of a sudden the HP looked a lot better to her.
Actually I was surprised by how the HPs looked, so much so in fact that I'm going to consider them in my research.
Until HD-DVD or bluray hit enough to be viable I'm not going to buy a new TV and replace my XBR. I don't think HDMI really delivers enough of a visual advantage over component connections to switch, and tube tv's are still at the top of their game.
