Panasonic sells more plasma displays than anyone else. The 60 series is the best line yet. I'm looking at getting a TH-50PX60U soon.
If you'll mainly be watching SDTV, then the TH-42PD60U is a great choice and under $2k even at big box stores.
Check out this AVS forum for many opinions.

Everyone I have talked to insists that the LCD will last longer than the plasma. I am considering one myself, so let me know what you find out.

Panasonic TH-42PX60U
Just got one yesterday. Looks great with the HD channels, regular shows look pretty good too. No regrets.

I have heard good things about onecall.com (I bought my Carver from them as well), but unless you live in the total boondocks, I would buy from a b&m store.

i have heard this as well. plasmas will "burn out"(?) after so many hours of use while the lcd will not. AND, i believe the extended warranties do not cover this.

Actualy, it is true, but the ratings have grown over the last few years on Plasmas to not worry about it any more. I think the 9th gen Pannys are rated at 60,000 hours which is 8h/day for 20 years.
This is for last years models:
"The product life span specification increased to 60,000 hours half life (half of the plasma panels initial level of brightness) in normal conditions. Panasonic has changed the panel structure to a new bound cell design (a technique adapted from Pioneer technology). This structural change improves light emitting intensity and efficiency thus allowing for brightness improvement. Products life span is also extended as a result of the lower power requirement to effectively light cells."
