For the rest of you:
The early SE had very few options. You could not get an ATX or a Zetec, and likewise, IIRC, you could not get a V-6 in the GL. Furthermore, the suspension was actually uprated from the LX, and 4-wheel discs were standard. (I think ABS was, too, but I'm not sure). The front seats were firmer, with bigger side bolsters, than anything else in the lineup. Anyway, for the first 2 years of production, all you had to say was "SE" and you implied a host of performance enhancements over the LX or GL. I don't really know much about the 97's, so I hope I'm not stepping on your toes.
Actually, you could get a GL with a V6. And SE ATX's are quite common. ABS was not standard. In 95, you could only get alloys on an SE. That changed in 96. The SE had absolutely no power differences. The springs/struts were firmer and leather wrapped steering wheel, fogs, spoiler, rear split seats, etc were standard. 96 saw the decontenting of lighted keyholes, a great feature if you don't have keyless entry. I love my 95 Some tidbits -Lance (replying under my wife's login)
01 Outback Limited Wagon with all the goodies I also get to drive my hubby's 95 SE!!!

The 96-early 98 "base below GL" Contours are real rare. El cheapo ones put out by Ford after complaints of the higher then Tempo prices.
The 97-early 98 SE's which were just like the 95-96. fall 97 was the start of the mainstream SE's. If it's an SE with "P66" in the VIN its a later one.
P67 is the "original SE" code.
2000 SE fleet, V6, ATX, ABS, no spoiler, T-Green/tan. Built 01/2000 in MO. Added 12 spoke factory SE rims, K&N. Biggest mod: ESP Plan!

Gettting in line with the rest of you. See sig. Also, seems I recall reading that the 97 SEs are "rare" because the SVT started production in the middle of that year and bumped it out. No? At any rate, we are all together in this, no matter what vintage we drive. Long live the Contour!
Luigi 1997 SE, black, MTX, BAT suspension kit, resonatorless, Dynomax Superturbo, Corbeau GTS-II driver's seat, seven spoke SE wheels, K&N, tranny cocktail, Mobile 1
Used 96 Duratech with 35K installed at 92.5K due to engine fire. Replace your water pump today!
