Don't kid yourself; you have rednecks there...

Raccoons can be a complete and utter pest; I've shot a few in my day as well. They are extremely cute critters, but they typically are disease carriers (i.e., RABIES) and once they figure out how to get into something, it's practically impossible to keep them out or away from whatever they find interesting without killing them.

I actually have had to shoot one off of a hunting dog (pointer) of mine that got into a tangle with one; they latch on and will NOT let go until they are dead or the dog runs off. It was immediately off to the vet for rabies shots for the dog, too.

I don't think most people go out of their way to fill them full of lead, but they can be a bloody menace...

Squirrels make good eating, so plinking the occasional bushy-tail off of the bird feeders isn't a bad thing. Pan-fried squirrel (olive oil, sun-dried tomatoes, white wine and a touch of molasses in the mix) pairs quite nicely with a bold Syrah or spicy Chianti.

You city-slickers don't know what you are missing at times.
