They prove to be rather handy when you're driving MTX, or in some states, driving period.
Yep, it's basically a handsfree capability, but the nice thing is you don't have a wire to deal with, and also most of them are somewhat multifunction (at the very least, they have their own volume control and can handle call-switching and stuff, although I've seen one with a caller ID display, which I don't totally understand). I've never paid retail for one; the first one I had was a Craigslist find ($20, looked brand new), and the one I have now came with my phone.
