OK, I called PartSource. The guy claimed it was 134a in a kit made by "Red Teck," but given what I have read about the regs on this stuff, I suspect it is something else. But if it works....$79 is awfully tempting. I am at least going to look into it.

Duracool claims to do the same, but it is hydrocarbon based -- essentially propane or butane. With the right air to fuel mixture that could be a concern during an accident, or if you have a leak.

I have read that BUT regular freon can also ignite under the right situation. Also can't be any more dangerous than your full gas tank during an accident. It looks as though RED TEK uses a similar formula.
All this 'Duracool could explode/catch fire' seems to be more of a scare tactic by the makers of freon as opposed to a real safety concern.

I would argue it is very different. For one, your gas tank is essentially in the centre of a car during a crash, whereas your A/C condenser is out front.

Possibly. It is highly unlikely, but even with my limited experience in the propane field (did two summers with propane companies), I am cautious.
Either way, I am going to get things leak checked first. If I have a big leak, then I have spent $79 to find out where, instead of wasting $79 on a kit that ends up blowing out into the atmosphere in a week.

i work at a duracool dealer. I have used it in my car (actualy i did it today). Not because i sell it but i would go with Duracool over red-tec. I've heard bad things from garages about it thew the city. At my work the duracool is 11.95 a can (part #f006) the sealer (#de0011)is about 20-22 bucks. red-tec and dura cool do the same thing but the dura cool seems to survive winter a little better than red-tec
