Things that make your AC not work: leak (will lead to low freon level), bad compressor (will not work or work ineffectively) plugged orifice tube (will cause freeze up of system....you will see ice), bad condensor (the thing in your grill) usually catches a rock and creats leak or the fins become so bent they will not allow airflow) or a bad evaporator (inside car)...this usually does not go bad....

you forgot the accumulater/dryer that is located under the battery, the foam on it from the factory will harbor moisture and rust it out causing a major leak, in my case on large enough to empty the system in 3 days or less

basically every AC system has a max amount it is supposed to hold.
this info can be found on a sticker under the hood.
it is usually in pounds and ounces.
unless the car is an import and thenits in grams.

unless you know for sure how much is in the sytem already, you shouldnt be adding alot.

when you take it to a dealer they dont use the little cans.
they either use old school guages or an AC machine.
with the machine they can actually recover everythig out of your system includeing compressor oil.
then they can refill the system with the right amount of oil and Refrigerant

if your AC doesnt work at all, that usually means that the system doesnt have enough refrigerant in it. the compresasor wont kick on if the system is below a certain pressure.
you can add refrigerant with the little cans as long as you dont over do it.
if the car takes 1.5lbs (24oz) dont go and put 30 Oz in it.
get as close as you can with out goign over.

I just did this yesterday. It didnt work very good. I got the adapter/hose without the gauge on it. The engine was running and he ac was on max. Only about an 1/8th of the can or so was empty after about 10 minutes. The ac did not get any colder either.

Could I try it again as I did not take the adapter off of the can?

I would shake up the can really well. You could even tip the can upside-down for a short while. Just make sure that you don't keep it upside down for too long, as you don't want the liquid going into the system, hence shaking it really well is crucial to the process. It shouldn't take more than a few mins for a can. I just did my mother's car a few weeks ago and she has a minor leak. It's not worth repairing so I recharge it every season.

Adapter? What are you talking about? You attach the refridgerant at one end and make sure that the piercing device isn't in contact with the refridgerant until you're ready to charge the system. Then you depress or turn the mechanism to pierce the can, so that it can go into the system.

ok you dont turn the can upside down atall, and theres no need to shake the can atall there is a tube at the bottom of the can that picks it up . heres the deal , DONT USE THE CANS, its garbage and they are very dangerous. and if some one wants to be a jerk and turn you in when they see you letting some freon out of the can you go to jail and they get 10k. so have fun
