The trick here is to not use the whole bar. Break off a chunk each time you clay, or if the surface is really bad use a chunk for a part of the car. That way if you drop it you haven't lost the whole bar. Personally I find that if you clay bar on a regular basis (for me once or twice a year) a small bit can go far.
