Does anyone know of a free software to convert .m4a audio tracks (iTunes format) into .mp3 format? I have looked all over and can't find any freebies. Thanks.

jhymn will take actual itunes files and convert them to mp3. I dunno about files that were not generated by itunes.

I assume you're using Windows.

ITunes can do it automatically, though it's a little clunky.

Go to Edit -> Preferences --> Advanced -> Importing.
Import Using: "MP3 Encoder"
Setting: (choose whatever bit rate you want, I use 320 myself)

click OK

then select whatever song(s) you want to convert, click the Advanced menu and then select "Convert Selection To MP3"

I thought .m4a was the protected format used by iTunes? If so, simply burn the files as a music CD, and import it as MP3.

dBpowerAMP works great:

Here's the link to the m4a (mp4) ---> mp3 codec that you need:

Those are .m4p (for "protected")

.m4a is MPEG-4 "Audio"

.m4v is MPEG-4 "Video"

.m4b is MPEG-4 "Books" (like a podcast, but they use .m4a too)

Those are non-standard uses, but are used by Apple, and therefore common.

Most just use the ".mp4" extention

it is. but for instance, if you rip music with winamp it can create m4p's too.

If you have protected itunes music you want converted to mp3, jhymn will do it as well as remove all the DRM stuff.
